Laptop Recommendations

Many people ask us which computers are best for individuals with dyslexia. Based on our experience, we have found that Chromebooks are an excellent choice, especially for children and teenagers.

Chromebooks are cost-effective options, usually priced at around £150 or more. They run on ChromeOS, allowing you to use a Google Account to sync your documents, settings, and extensions across any Chromebook. With Family Link, you can monitor how your child spends time on their device, share locations, manage privacy settings, and more.

Additionally, Chromebooks come with built-in features that are friendly for dyslexic users, such as:

  • “Select-to-Speak” feature that reads text aloud.
  • Voice Typing in Google Docs – transcribe speech to text accurately.
  • High-Contrast Mode and Customisable Text Display – visual adjustment settings, high-contrast mode and custom font sizes.
  • Dictation for System-Wide Voice Input –  input text anywhere on the system using their voice. This function is system-wide and available across most apps.

Chrome Extensions and Apps for Dyslexia Support

Chromebooks can also utilise a range of Chrome extensions designed for dyslexia, such as:

  • Read&Write for Google Chrome, which offers tools like word prediction, picture dictionaries, and speech-to-text.
  • BeeLine Reader, adds colour gradients to help guide the eyes through text, which can improve reading speed and focus.
